3 Ways to Wear a Denim Shirt Dress: Belted with Boots

Is January too early to find my new favorite piece of 2017?

My mother and her good buddy, Santa – don’t be jealous, but I’ve been told they’re tight – gave me a holiday IOU for an afternoon of shopping and an item I admired but wouldn’t normally splurge on. Something unique, something special, something with that ‘wow’ factor… And while we were out, I was instantly attracted to this Madewell Denim Tie Neck Shirtdress at Nordstrom.

On the hanger, it’s a little overwhelmingly blue – there’s just a lot of heavy fabric here. I tried it on half because I felt so drawn to it and half just to prove to my mother, who looked very reluctant, wrong. (Ha! All in good fun, I swear.)

On my body, it was… also overwhelmingly blue. But then I tried on a different size and I cuffed the sleeves and I added a belt and the right shoes, and it started to come together. And after finally styling it right, my mother and I could both start the see the many versatile ways to wear this timeless dress.

This week, I’m styling this Madewell dress three ways. Up first? The way it was likely intended to be worn: buttoned-up with a bow.

Currently wearing… Madewell Denim Tie Neck Shirtdress, Nordstrom [HERE] | Boots, Naturalizer | Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Crossbody Bag c/o St. Louis Premium Outlets [SEEN HERE] | Watch, Marc by Marc Jacobs | Headband, Anthropologie | Bracelets, Kendra Scott, some c/o some found on sale [HERE/SIMILAR] | Meg’s Favorite Earrings c/o Collections by Joya [HERE]

Think this dress would make a good addition to your wardrobe? The fabric is medium-weight with a lot of stretch, so it is sincerely more comfortable than any other shirt dress I’ve ever owned. Since it isn’t too flimsy, it doesn’t wrinkle much throughout the day. Keep in mind, I did size up to accommodate my – what’s the cute, polite way to say ass? – behind.  That isn’t the area I’d say I’m most blessed in, so keep in mind the hip area may be tighter than you’d expect.

Come back tomorrow and Wednesday to see two totally different looks featuring this same dress!
