Casual Tuesday

By night — and sometimes at lunchtime — I am a blogger and freelance reporter. By day, I work in marketing for a tech start-up in St. Louis. I’m practically a nerdier Superman, I know, except… I don’t have to change my outfits (much).

There are so many amazing perks of my full-time job, but one of my personal favorites is the relaxed dress code. It is just one less thing to waste time worrying about. Things were a lot more formal at my last job, and mornings getting ready for a ‘business casual’ office weren’t casual at all. The pieces I was comfortable wearing were not the items appropriate for that office. I needed to rock some dressed-up shifts or suit separates, when I wanted nothing but button-ups and dark-wash skinnies. The temperature was always one extreme or another, which left me ruining silk dresses with sweat or shivering through my pantyhose. I either sat all day OR ran around all day, so those awful suit pants were always wrinkled in the butt and knees. Getting on the ground to set up a product photo doesn’t work well in formalwear. Chasing sources or working a photoshoot took twice as long in my fancy shoes. I had to switch my nose ring for a stud every morning. The whole thing was exhausting at best and distractingly uncomfortable at worst.

So you can imagine my excitement when I joined my current company, where the “dress like a logical human unless you’re off to a fancy meeting in which case wear fancy-meeting clothes” mindset rules. All that time I used to spend ironing a shift dress before work? I use it to come into the office early, or wash my hair more often, or do yoga, or sleep. It’s one less thing to stress about and one more reason to be comfortable.

Oh, and it means I can shop for weekend and weekday looks at the same time. Case in point? This Leopard Tee from Soft Surroundings. Outside of the office I love it with booties and a hat. Inside the office, an undershirt (the back panel of this top is sheer) and flats are the perfect additions.
