Denim Party | #Karlie4Express Denim Jacket Styled Two Ways with Mattea LinAe

What’s that you say? I didn’t post about the Karlie Kloss x Express fashion show experience enough? Agreed.

One of the greatest parts of participating in the #Karlie4Express runway show was meeting inspirational women from across the country, like Mattea. Mattea is a fashion blogger, photographer, current student at my alma mater, and all-around rad woman. Say hi.

I think I mentioned before that the #Karlie4Express winner experience was a lot like summer camp in that you left with close, fast friends – except now they’re Instagram buds instead of pen pals like after my last summer at camp, which is great because my adult handwriting is awful. So, Mattea and I were chatting about the amazing clothes we were given during the show and decided to meet up again IRL to style one of our favorite pieces. Welcome to our denim party.

I have been posting about this Karlie Kloss x Express Cropped Denim Jacket a lot, and for good reason: it looks amazing with a lot of things. Really wondering how versatile it is? Mattea and I each decided to style it our own way and meet up for pics last weekend. See the two looks below.

I went with a patterned miniskirt and suede heels. Read more about my look in Mattea’s blog post here.

Mattea went with denim on denim, which is a look I adore. Also, I’m feeling mega inspired to get some (or make some…) super distressed jeans. These look fantastic on her!

Denim on denim can be so tricky – how do you make sure you’re balancing it correctly?

Mattea: Denim on denim is pretty tricky to nail. I typically go about styling it in a couple of different ways. The first is to pair opposite washes. If I’m wearing a lighter wash denim jacket, I’ll usually go for a medium-darker wash pair of jeans. If the washes are similar, then I usually try and go for a statement and bolder look. Today, the washes I wore were pretty similar, so I ended up pairing the more simple jacket with bolder jeans.

How else do you like to style this jacket?

Mattea: I really like to change things up with this jacket because it’s so versatile. It could easily be layered in fall and winter with other staples, but could also work as a light jacket in spring in summer over tanks, graphic tees, and dresses!

Your outfit is so simple – mainly two colors – but still really dynamic. How do you like to add interest to your outfits?

Mattea: I’d like to think that my style is pretty simple. I’m not always big on layering, so I make sure add really subtle, but bold pieces. If my top is a little simpler, I’ll go with bolder bottoms or shoes. If my top is too bland, I’ll add a statement necklace or bandana…sometimes even both! Balance is key. I don’t personally go for too simple, or too bold – somewhere in between is kind of where I like to hang out.

Love this jacket? Us too. See more of it styled by me here and here, and Mattea here and here. Trust me, you’re going to love all her looks.
