Goodbye, Shine! | My Summertime Oily Skin Routine

Oh, you like my highlight? …Is it actually highlighter, or is it my forever shiny skin? Any gal with oily skin knows this time of year is the worst – and it seems all those articles on combating summer shine are written with the barely-there oil ladies in mind. If you have shiny skin year round, this round-up is for you. Keep reading to see which products I love for keeping my skin as matte as possible.

First things first: Even if you have oily skin, you still need to moisturize. For perpetually shiny skin, I like the lightweight Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer. Then, once it has dried I prime with OC8 Professional Mattifying Gel and Colorescience Mattifying Perfector Prime Mattify Protect. The OC8 option smells sort of like glue but is INCREDIBLY effective and totally sheer; the Colorescience option adds some SPF and a bit of peach color for a small amount of coverage. If I’m really looking for more coverage – or a little pore blurring – I grab the Pore Fessional by Benefit.

The only concealer to ever survive my shiny skin is Tarte’s amazing Shape Tape. Set this stuff with a bit of powder and it does not budge!

Speaking of powder, I switch between two: The Lancôme Dual Finish Multi-tasking Longwear Powder Foundation and the Colorescience Natural Finish Pressed Foundation SPF 20. Once I have all the coverage I need, I move to the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder and go to town. Just when I look like I am covered with powder I add an extra layer, then top it with 8 to 10 spritzes of the L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray – by the time I leave the house, my oily skin will settle any leftover powder into perfection.

Like any forever-shiny gal, I always keep a few touch-up items in my purse. I like the Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-on Sunscreen SPF 50 and Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets for on-to-go help. Oh, and a stack of Starbucks napkins because… class. (But for real, they’re great blotting papers.)

When I get home, I’ll wash off using the First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser with Red Clay if I’ve been feeling extra oily. Then, I rotate a few oil-control masks including the First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Purifying Mask with Red Clay, a peel-off mask; GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment wash-off mask; and Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask, which somehow helps with shine and dryness at once.

While these aren’t all the products I use, these ones really seem to help control (or survive) the shine, even during the summer. Ready to try one? Shop my favorites below.
