When I was younger, I’d visit St. Louis with friends or family to pick someone up at the airport or see a museum or go to a concert. Almost always, we’d end up at a mall – it was the 90s, who wasn’t at the mall? – and if I had any money in my useless kid purse I’d head to the European-looking candy store to buy a molasses lollipop. They were such a treat – I’d even try to take a nibble, re-wrap it in the bag, and save some for later (which was both hard to do and very sticky.) But since I was so high on sugar, I never paid any attention to the name of the store. It was simply that place with the molasses lollipops, and it was fantastic.
When I got older and moved here myself, my mother asked me if I ever found out who made those candies. I couldn’t quite piece together where I’d had them as a kid. Which mall was it? Where was the storefront? Was it across from the swimwear boutique or the bra shop? I gave up on my hunt after my third trip to a mall with no luck. Maybe it was better to not find it again. You can’t spoil the memory that way.
But then I had to visit Plaza Frontenac for work, and there I saw Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier.
The molasses lollipops are just as good as I remembered, and even come in themed gift sets with festive designs. And now that I’ve been to the shop so many times, they aren’t the only thing I love there! My taste buds are crushin’ on the Coconut Caramel Chocolate Bars, as well as everything included in the beautiful (and delicious!) Holiday Buffet Ballotin seen below.
How cute would that be as a hostess gift? I was tempted to save some of my chocolate until family came in for Christmas, but… I’ve been really enjoying it myself. It’s good to give yourself a gift, right? Right.
Looking to celebrate the season with chocolate? Other than the favorites I listed above, I’d try the 8 oz. Hand-Painted Saint Nick, the Glaceed Apricots au Chocolat, or the Peppermint Patties.
