I’m about to hit my year mark of pilates, and I’m proud to report it is the longest I’ve ever stuck to a workout routine as an adult. It is also the most I have ever sweated, the sorest I have ever been, and one of the most proud of myself I’ve made me in my adult life.
Fitness isn’t something I find particularly interesting. Or at least I didn’t. Pre baby – and pre IVF/IUI/general infertility treatment and body attack – it wasn’t something I regularly focused on. And then after having Charlie I realized I needed to get into shape to keep up with her. Her energy is growing every day. I’m lucky if I don’t nap when she does. Something had to change.
I started pilates specifically because I had made a mom friend (hi Taylor!) who is an instructor, and her similar sense of humor made me realize I wouldn’t hate working out with her. I tried a few private sessions to get a feel for the machine at the start of 2023 and decided to opt for the unlimited membership. Maybe if I put some money behind it, I’d be motivated enough to go.
And I’ll be honest: for most classes, that was the only reason I actually went. But it still got me real results.
After a year of classes, I’m shocked to report I’m quite the convert. I actually look forward to classes now and feel better after I attend. I appreciate the soreness I feel in my muscles because I can see those results later when I’m lifting Charlie or playing with her. And I’ve even started to see a bit more energy. Not every day, sure, but maaaaaybe all those fitness fanatics weren’t wrong when they said you feel better from working out. I hate to admit it, but I also can’t wait until my next class.
If you’re thinking about trying pilates yourself for the first time, I have a few tips. Try a private class if you’re new, as the machines did have a learning curve and I was happier to test it out by myself first. Find a quality sports bra and leggings now, not a few classes in. (Pilates may seem chill, but you’re moving and sweating like crazy, and I practically gave myself black eyes with my own chest before I actually did some shopping for sports bras and workout tights.) And remember to try it more than once. It took me a few classes to feel the click, but now it’s the only exercise I can see myself doing. And I know I’m better because of it.
