Even though it isn’t how we met, the punk scene brought my husband and I together. For years we circled around each other—quite literally, at the same venues, at the same shows, and often with me on the floor and him on the stage—before finally meeting and quickly falling in love, as if all those years so close had been our earliest dating.
When we heard a new, punk record shop (filled with arcade games and weird toys and everything else we’ve always loved) opened in an adjacent neighborhood, we obviously knew we had to stop by immediately. Say hello to The Record Space.
The Record Space is everything you could want in a record shop: ample selection (including, obviously, some fantastic punk finds), quirky toys, old arcade favorites and a general dive-with-character vibe. Located on Gravois just outside of South City, it’s a quick drive into Affton and definetly worth the trip. We spent the afternoon digging through records and talking about favorites with the owner, Don, and couldn’t leave without a handful of new-to-us dollar 45s by unfamiliar bands… And judging by a few finds I just saw on the business’ Instagram page, I’ll be back soon to pick up some psychobilly 78s.
Live in (or near) St. Louis? Make sure you come to the store’s first Record Store Day event on April 13, complete with live music, food, and raffles. And until then… tell me what to listen to! What has been spinning on your record player lately?
