Working for a tech company has me in a jeans-and-pullover rut. On one hand, a casual office is the greatest; instead of ironing fancy dresses in the morning, I can do yoga. (Or, more realistically, fight the alarm clock. But sometimes I do yoga! Honest!) On the other hand, I’ve gotten so comfortable I pretty much wear the same five outfits every week. There’s the grey pullover and jeans look, or the grey tee with a blazer and jeans look, or the tan pullover and jeans look, or the denim shirt with jeans look, or the big cozy green sweatshirt with jeans look. While it may be summer outside, it’s winter in my freezing office, so I don’t even have to adjust my look for the time of year. I don’t realize how often I wear these items until I think about how often I wash them — and then, of course, notice the premature pilling on the over-washed tops. Oops.
I didn’t think this was an issue until my Instagram page showed me that the look has taken over weekend, too. Skinny jeans and cut-off jean shorts and t-shirts and cozy tops. That’s it. All day. Every day. It’s the ultimate comfort, but considering I do own an extensive wardrobe, I’m too content with my new mini-closet.
Over the weekend I made myself wear a dress and try a new look. YOU’RE BETTER THAN THIS, JULIA. COME ON NOW. ENJOY THE CRAZY CLOSET YOU OWN.

When my husband saw me in this dress he said, and I quote, “I love when things have a Wilma bottom.” (I tried to explain the hem was lace, not zig-zag, but he wouldn’t listen.)
I normally shy away from loose dresses with waist outlines because I’m afraid they’ll make me look short, but this frock was about $7 at Nordstrom Rack and I found it on one of those terrible days where you’re going to buy something as the grown-up version of getting ice cream to fix things. Better I get the $7 dress than the $300 handbag, no? Plus, the color was pretty and I loved the trim. Since it’s so loose, I’m learning to really like the shape; it was yet another item I’m glad I didn’t judge before trying on.
So let’s recap: This outfit has fringe and lace and floral print. It is a dress. There is no denim. It is actually seasonally appropriate. That’s a win, right? Right.
